The pictures of sand, seaweed, and sun that spring to mind when thinking of a day in Galveston may be the first to come to mind, but the little island is jam-packed with activities for families that go far beyond visiting the beach.

From tours to water parks, aquariums to museums (and great restaurants in between), we've identified kid-friendly activities throughout the city and compiled a list of wonderful family-friendly things to do in Galveston with kids.

The next time you travel off the mainland. From tours to water parks, aquariums to museums (and great restaurants in between), we've identified kid-friendly activities throughout the city.

Ride the Galveston Island Ferry

Are you looking for something unusual, entertaining, and completely free to do? Taking the Galveston Island Ferry with the kids is a great family activity. As you travel between the Bolivar Peninsula and the mainland, passengers are welcome to stroll (as well as a drive) on the bridge. Children will have a joy searching for fish, dolphins, boats, and birds as you pass by. The entire adventure takes less than 40 minutes round-trip, including stops.

Get Outdoors at Galveston Island State Park

The Galveston Island State Park is the go-to destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers looking to get their fill of adventure and nature. Fishing, bird viewing, hiking, kayaking, swimming, and camping are some of the recreational activities available. Entry is $5 per person, with children under the age of 12 admitted free of charge. You may come to the park for the day to make use of the beach, or you can stay overnight at one of the 66 campsites that are now available. Visit the Nature Center, pick up the Junior Ranger Activity Journal and Explorer Pack, and complete activities to earn a badge. Kids can even become Junior Rangers by completing tasks to earn a badge.

Take a Galveston Tour

Take one of the many excursions available in and around the city to gain a sense of the island and its history. In addition to offering something different, each tour provides tourists with a view of Galveston that goes beyond the sand and surf. Food tours, 1895 Moody Mansion tours, SegCity tours, boat tours, walking tours, and riding tours are just a few of the options available. For the courageous ones, there are ghost tours of local haunted locations available as well. We really enjoy a dolphin tour, which takes families on a boat trip around Galveston Bay, where they can see the dolphins jump while enjoying an interesting boat ride.

Bay Fishing and Offshore Fishing in Galveston

Whatever your preference, whether it's in the bay, along the surf, or from a pier, Galveston offers a variety of opportunities to throw a line and spend the day fishing with the family. Are you seeking more intensive experience? Consider making a day of it by arranging an offshore fishing trip, where it's not uncommon to catch enormous tuna and marlins while out on the water. The youngsters may not have the strength to reel in the enormous fish on their own, but the experience will be one they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Visit Galveston Art Galleries

Was it ever dawned on you that Galveston has a strong art scene? If your family enjoys art, take a trip to one of Galveston's numerous art galleries to see works by local artists as well as pieces from other countries. However, Clay Cup Studios is unique in that children may participate in the creation of their own pottery and paintings there. The Strand's establishments showcase local artwork on Saturday nights throughout the year as part of Galveston's ArtWalk, which takes place at various times throughout the year.

Stroll The Strand Historic District

The Strand, which is the heart of downtown Galveston, offers visitors the opportunity to kick off their shoes and stroll about while visiting the many shops and restaurants. In addition to a variety of novelty shops filled with trinkets and memorabilia, you'll find restaurants and bars to stop for a bite to eat or a drink, and every kid's favorite stop: La King's Confectionery, where you'll find an endless selection of candy, antique arcade games, and even Salt Water Taffy pulling demos. Without a stop at La King's, your trip to Galveston would be incomplete!

Enjoy Galveston's Best Museums

In Galveston, history is abundant, and there is no shortage of museums to explore, whether you're a child or an adult with a sense of wonder. For those who are interested in transportation, the Texas Seaport Museum/ELISSA, Seawolf Park, and the Galveston Railroad Museum are all worth a visit. Do you require anything that is particularly designed for children? Make a pit stop at the Galveston Children's museum if you have the opportunity. Aside from that, the Galveston Naval Museum, The Bryan Museum, and the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling & Rig Museum are also worth seeing.

Take Breathtaking Photos

Many of our favorite sites to visit in and around town also happen to be fantastic locations for taking adorable Instagram-worthy images of children. A number of murals may be seen in the Strand neighborhood, along the Seawall, and in many other spots across the island of Vancouver.

Restaurants in Galveston are great places to eat.

In Galveston, there are a plethora of family-friendly dining establishments to select from, many of which have seaside views. Restaurants like The Spot for a terrific burger, Tortuga's for amazing Tex-Mex, and Willie G's for seafood and a beautiful view of the cruise ships setting sail are all excellent choices. While in Galveston during the winter months, make sure to check out the restaurants that are participating in Galveston Restaurant Weeks to have a delicious dinner at an affordable price while also supporting a worthwhile cause.

Schlitterbahn is a water park where you may slip and slide.

Schlitterbahn Galveston is the place to go if you want to have a fun-filled water adventure without having to deal with sand. In addition to a variety of rides for visitors of all ages, the water park features kids sections and beaches, a lazy river, hot pools, and other attractions, including MASSIV, the world's highest water coaster. You may also hire cabanas for the day, which will provide you a spot to come back to unwind and recharge after a long day at the beach. Tickets are available for purchase as one- or two-day passes, as well as season, passes.
