Charlotte, North Carolina, is a landlocked city. If you live in Charlotte, you don't have to miss out on all the water fun. Several beautiful lakes in Charlotte NC surround the main metropolis. These lakes allow boating.
There are natural and constructed lakes that allow swimming, fishing, and boating, as well as pathways that run through forests and up mountains. These lakes are the greatest options in Charlotte, whether you want to be close to downtown or a couple of hours out.

Immerse yourself in nature, looking for hummingbirds, spotted sandpipers, and cliff swallows. The 3,750-acre lake offers boating and fishing for largemouth bass, white bass, bluegill, and crappie. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course here, which is free to play.
Lake Wylie (SC)
Lake Wylie is in South Carolina, although it's only 14 miles from Charlotte. The scenery is stunning, and you can get away from the city in a half-hour drive, so no need to stay overnight. It's a man-made reservoir with plenty of activities for the whole family and great bars and restaurants.
Visitors can go tubing, fishing, or just splash around in one of the several coves with shallow seas. Copperhead Island, a 14-acre park, provides direct lake access with various boat ramps, fishing piers, kayaking, hiking, picnics, and beach volleyball.
Lake James - Linville
Lake James, in Linville, is a two-hour drive north of Charlotte, with clean mountain water ranging from emerald to turquoise. It is located at the foot of Linville Gorge, the state's "Grand Canyon," and offers magnificent hiking trails and tours of Linville Caverns.
Fishing, swimming, and boating are popular activities on the lake, which is home to largemouth bass. Colorful wildflowers and steep forested hills covered with pines, hemlocks, and hardwoods are prevalent in the area. Watch for deer, muskrat, flying squirrel, mink, fox, and rabbit. This is a popular camping spot in North Carolina.
Lake Tillery, Uwharrie Lakes Region, NC
With 100 miles of shoreline that includes Morrow Mountain State Park and the Uwharrie National Forest, Lake Tillery is just over 50 miles east of Charlotte.
It is possible to rent a fishing boat or a pontoon. There are multiple 18-hole golf courses, a mini-golf course, museums, and restaurants nearby. Campgrounds are offered as well as day trips from the city.
Lake Lure, North Carolina

Badin Lake is a popular spot for boating, hiking, mountain biking, four-wheeling, and camping. There is plenty of game fish to catch, including largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie. If you don't possess a boat, you can rent one right there.
Uwharrie State Park offers lovely walks along the water, which is warm enough for summer swimming. The Badin Swim Area features sandy beaches with a designated safety zone, and King's Mountain Point has picnic areas, fishing piers, and four campers.
Belews Lake: Pine Hall Access | Stokes County, NC
Belews Lake is a reservoir built by Duke Energy in 1973 to cool the Belews Creek Steam Station near Pine Hall and Stokesdale. It's around 100 miles from Charlotte or a 45-minute journey. It features fishing, boating, and hiking routes that surround the lake.
The pristine water makes it ideal for scuba diving practice before venturing out into the open ocean. The adjacent power plant creates a layer of steam over the water, making for wonderful Instagram images.
Randleman Lake - Randleman, NC
Randleman Lake, which was established in 2004 and is located in the Cape Fear River Basin, is only a little more than an hour away from Uptown, making it a fun and convenient destination for spending the day on or near the lake.
Over 100 miles of shoreline provide opportunities for a range of activities such as fishing for bass, bluegill catfish, and crappie; boating; sailing; stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking; and swimming. You can rent kayaks at a marina for a very reasonable price as well – currently less than $20 for a whole day at the time of writing.
Jordan Lake, North Carolina, Located in Wilsonville
Jordan Lake is a 14,000-acre reservoir located west of Raleigh-Durham, around 150 miles from Charlotte. It's worth the 2-hour drive to see the biggest concentration of bald eagles in the eastern U.S.
Visitors can also enjoy spectacular mountain views while swimming, paddleboarding, or snorkeling in one of the best lakes in the world. The Jordan Lake Recreation Area has seven swim beaches, over a thousand campsites, and over 14 miles of hiking paths.
Mountain Island Lake - The Hidden Gem, Charlotte, NC
Mountain Island Lake, located approximately 15 miles from downtown, is a local favorite. While the lake serves the local community by supplying clean drinking water and energy, tourists can take advantage of the pristine, quiet waters by swimming, boating, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Rural Hill is a 265-acre property owned by the community that includes a natural park with scenic hiking trails, six historic residences (including the Bethesda Schoolhouse, which was one of the earliest African-American schools), and a thriving farm with highland cows. Scottish Festival, Amazing Maize Maze, and Sheep Dog Trials are all held on the grounds of this historic site.
